The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, as one of the four Inns of Court, exists to promote and support the rule of law throughout the Common Law world, and the fair and effective administration of justice which the rule of law requires. The rule of law is an essential cornerstone of a modern democratic society, and a strong, independent and ethical Bar is an essential component of it.
The Middle Temple comprise of over 40 properties, many of which are listed building, set around formal gardens and courtyards, with a total site area of some 24,300m², a picture of the buildings can be seen below:
Buildings within the Temple itself are still held under the 1608 letters patent of James I, but some that are just outside the Temple were acquired afterwards. Some buildings are more contemporary, replacing those destroyed in WW2 by bombing, with others dating back to the 16th century.
